Nusa Penida Volunteer Nyhetsbrev 2011 Desember

There’ll be no snow on Nusa
This coming Christmas day,
No mistletoe or tinsel
Festooned on Crystal Bay

No silver-bearded Santa
in Sampalan or Ped,
But lots of happy memories
To feast upon instead

We’ve made so many great new friends
Mens du arbeider side ved side,
Våre hjerter er nesten sprengning
Med kjærlighet og håp og stolthet

Så alle team i Nusa
Vil gjerne ønske dere alle
En riktig god jul
Vi håper du får en ball.

It is astonishing how short a time it takes for very wonderful things to happen!
Six months have passed since FNPF began taking volunteers at Nusa Penida.

Since then:

Nusa Penida er en unik uoffisiell fuglereservat øya. It is a safe haven for the release of endangered and valuable bird species usually trapped to be sold on the black market. On Nusa Penida there exists a social contract under which all villages protect the birds. In return FNPF works to support the community through its education and outreach programs.

Thank you for your donations of time, energy and money that help to make this possible.

Remember the time…

We can’t possibly give individual shout-outs to every volunteer, but we’ve include a few stories we hope will refresh your memory and make you smile.

In Schools
Volunteers visit local schools with our community education programs teaching english, composting, waste management and conservation.
We’ve been approached to help establish organic vegetable gardens at several local schools.

.
.

Community Clean-up
We sweltered and sweat to clear the centre and local area of rubbish and debris.  What used to be scrub and piles of dead branches has been converted to a coconut nursery, composting site, and popular parkland with a football field for the kids, complete with goals and nets.

.

Model Organic Vegetable Garden
The first harvest of organic vegetables from the experimental organic garden was so successful that the garden has now expanded to twice the size.  Wet season planting has begun and we’re enjoying eating fresh, tasty, organic vegetables daily.

Planting for Habitat
Musim hujan wet seasonmeans planting time on Nusa Penida.  Volunteers staying with us from January through March 2012 will get their hands dirty planting pioneer saplings at the 100ha reforestation site and roadside to create wildlife corridors.

Turtles freed
Many people who stayed with us were disturbed by the plight of the turtles kept in small tanks at a dock near the FNPF Centre.  You will be pleased to hear that the turtles were recently confiscated by Indonesian authorities and entered into a rehabilitation and release program.

Music of FNPF Nusa Penida
Unless you slept through your time with us you’ll remember night-times at the table spent singing, laughing, telling stories and playing music.  Well, we’ve produced a Nusa Penida Album! Med Wayan og Mikes favorittsanger pluss noen nye utgivelser, this compilation was inspired by the FNPF Nusa Penida volunteer community.   Check it out on youtube soon.

Christmas Appeal

A grass fire swept through our reforestation site this year killing many of the pioneer saplings growing there.  This silly season, instead of sending Christmas cards made of trees, donate to us and we will plant trees on your behalf.  With your continued support we will recreate habitat for wildlife and people.

One song can spark a moment,
one flower can wake the dream.
One tree can start a forest,
one bird can herald spring.
One vote can change a nation,
one sunbeam lights a room.
One candle wipes out darkness,
one laugh will conquer gloom.
One step must start each journey,
one word must start a prayer.
One hope will raise our spirits,
one touch can show you care.
One voice can speak with wisdom,
ett hjerte kan vite hva som er sant.
Ett liv kan gjøre en forskjell,
at forskjellen starter med deg.
