6 Bali Spreeuwen uitgebracht op Nusa Lembongan

On December 20th 2012, FNPF released 6 Bali Starlings onto the small island of Nusa Lembongan, one of the 3 Penida islands off the south east coast of bali (Penida, Ceningan en Lembongan).

FNPF had previously released 74 Bali Starlings onto the larger island of Penida. As their numbers increased, the birds have spread across the Nusa Penida with a few the narrow channel onto Nusa Ceningan and Nusa Lembongan. The release of these six Bali Starlings is to help increase the genetic diversity of the birds living on Lembongan.

The birds were bred by Soehana Oetojo, Indonesia’s most experienced Bali Starling breeder, rearing over 850 Bali Starlings in captivity at his centre in Bandung, West Java. He’s a strong supporter of FNPF and accompanied us on the boat to see his birds released into the wild.  The 6 birds had spent six months living in FNPF’s rehabilitation centre on Nusa Penida, so they were already accustomed to the local climate and food sources.

FNPF’s purchase of the Bali Starlings was sponsored by Five Elements
