ICCO Regional Council visits FNPF Bali starlings island project

Nusa Penida : Friends of the National Parks Foundation (FNPF) was honoured to host program sponsor International Christian Church Organisation (ICCO), in September 2014, at our FNPF Bali Starling conservation site and new Nusa Penida Sustainability Village in-progress. FNPF would like to sincerely thank ICCO for sponsorship of our Nusa Penida habitat conservation efforts as a contribution to the Fair Climate and Sustainable Forest Management Programme for Bali Starling Conservation.

Explorers visit Bali starlings: Ranked as Critically Endangered on the 2013 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species – four (4) Bali Stare (Leucopsar rothschildi) will be released into wild habitat on Nusa Penida where they are bred at FNPF conservation and education centre – 85 visiting guests of Durrell Expedition’s explorer ship will witness the bird release ceremony.

FNPF has partnered with world-acclaimed, UK-based conservation organisation Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust to host an expedition ship at Nusa Penida islandwith 85 environmentally-passionate, philanthropic guests plus ecology lecturers for a cultural day of unique island-conservation awareness including a Bali starling temple release ceremony.

The Durrell Expedition to Nusa Penida, off Bali, Indonesia – will be one of the calls during a ‘Critical Species and Islands-at-Risk’ discovery journey through Borneo, Bali and Komodo – and will be the first time Nusa Penida has hosted an expedition vessel of this size and importance.

Four Bali starlings, following a special captive breeding programme sponsored by each guest coming on the ship, will be released into wild habitat on Nusa Penida at FNPF project headquarters.  Otherwise known as Rothschild’s Starling, Rothschild’s Mynah, Bali Myna or White Starling (Leucopsar rothschildi) ist ranked as Critically Endangered on the 2013 IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Fascinating Guest Speakers on board the vessel include – zoologist, author and documentary-producer Dr Lee Durrell, MBE, and Singapore Zoo Curator Bernard Harrison, an expert in Southeast Asia conservation.  Both will be lecturing on board on the values of the critically-endangered Bali Starling conservation efforts, which FNPF has focused on since saving through breeding and release programs since 1999.

The expedition, which includes the visit to Nusa Penida, is the 4th conservation-focused expedition for The Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust – previous exploration trips have been to Madagascar, the remote islands of the Indian Ocean and a Latin American journey to Costa Rica, Panama and Colombia.

Operated by The Ultimate Travel Company each conservation expedition is created by Amelia Dalton to provide visits to important conservation projects and raise awareness of critically-endangered species. Passengers include Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust members, Martin Thompson from Ultimate Travel, and other adventurers passionate about the planet’s natural environment combined with a particular interest in wildlife and unusual destinations.

HRH The Princess Royal, is the Patron of Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and other distinguished supporters include David Attenborough. The next Durrell Expedition will be in February 2017 to East Africa, the remote Comoros Islands, Aldabra and the Seychelles.
